Award: Newark Backyard Sanitary Sewer Relocation Project
3rd Place from CWEA for Statewide Engineering Achievement Awards
West Yost received the third place statewide ranking for Engineering Achievement for the Newark Backyard Sanitary Sewer Relocation Project. The design included the relocation of existing sewer mains in the Newark Flat Top residential area to address structural deficiencies, maintenance issues, and system reliability. Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) was used to reroute private laterals from the backyard towards existing sewer mains located in the front streets. A low impact design approach combined with effective public outreach by the West Yost team resulted in very few complaints.
Prior to starting the project, West Yost Associates coordinated a pilot study for using the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to assist the District in evaluating the effectiveness and limitation of this construction method for the project. The pilot test verified the benefits of HDD for pipeline relocation and demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach for avoiding impacts to customers’ property including existing hardscape and landscape.
West Yost created a video that outlines the HDD process which is available for viewing on our YouTube Channel, or with the following link: HDD Pilot Study.
